Karma chameleon
Several people get their comeuppances in this latest column—and I pick my March Madness winners (men's and women's)
—And I quote: “Anyone can be a barbarian; it requires a terrible effort to remain a civilized man.”—Leonard Woolf
—Dine and dandy: Who doesn’t like food? Please don’t forget that I have another Substack—SAVOR with Andrew—that’s all about the Chicago dining scene.
—Karma chameleon: Look up the word “karma” in the dictionary and you just might see a photo of Timothée Chalamet. The opera and ballet communities must feel vindicated.
—Gender-bender: Recently, I saw Alanis Morissette on the performance show Austin City Limits—and was charmed when she changed her lyrics in “Ironic” to “It’s meeting the man of my dreams/And then meeting his beautiful … husband.”
—Job insecurity: Amazon recently advertised that “after one year, birthing parents get up to 20 weeks fully paid, and supporting parents get six weeks.”
Is this the same Amazon that recently announced that it was ending another 16,000 jobs as it restructures itself? In October, Amazon cut 14,000 jobs, mainly at the corporate level. At this rate, Amazon might end up with three people who might qualify for paid parental leave.
—Doppelganger: Kris Jenner and Lauren Sanchez Bezos caused quite the stir at this year’s Vanity Fair Oscars Party after they were repeatedly mistaken for each other, per The Daily Mail. What I’m wondering is who should’ve felt more insulted.
—Hoop dreams: Well, the brackets are out for the NCAA’s March Madness—the men’s and women’s premier college-basketball tournament—and they’re ready to be busted.
But I must say that I have my picks—so here goes:
